Chapter Eight

“YOU MADE BREAKFAST,” GUS muttered, stumbling into the kitchen, rubbing sleep from her eyes. Her dark brown hair stuck out in every direction since she failed to wear her scarf last night to bed. Not wanting to scar her guests, she had worn proper pajamas, even though it had taken her a while to find them. Her plain cream flannels, though quite comfortable, had been buried in one of her unpacked boxes. She sort of regretted never wearing them until now, but her usual pajamas consisted of a long, torn tank top and her underwear. She doubted Jayce would appreciate that show.

“I figured you’d like breakfast before going to work, but I wasn’t sure what time you left…” Jayce explained, glancing away. Was she being shy? “Um…thanks for the pajamas again,” she added, for the fourth time since Gus gave her the clothing last night.

Apparently, she didn’t want to come across as ungrateful for anything Gus did for her. After learning a bit about Jayce last night and knowing Jayce had put up with her sister for over a year, Gus could somewhat understand why Jayce continued to thank her. Still, she hoped it stopped soon. She wanted Jayce to be comfortable and she wanted Jayce to understand that she could already see the thanks in those obsidian eyes.

“No problem on the pajamas,” Gus replied, taking in how her pajamas fell on her guest. The clothes almost fit, something new to Gus because she towered over women around her. Plus, she usually worked out more than others, too.

Gus found that she liked the fact that the clothing almost fit Jayce. The sight teased her imagination. Perhaps their body types were similar as well. She shook that away. It was probably just the loneliness inside of her acting up.

Gus turned her attention to breakfast to rid herself of her inappropriate musings and smiled. “Oh, pancakes! I haven’t had homemade pancakes,” she said, a hint of childish glee in her voice. Slapping some pancakes onto her plate, she scooped some scrambled eggs next to them. She passed on the toast because it’d take up room for the pancakes. How early did Jayce get up to make all these things? Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so excited over the pancakes. She hoped Jayce didn’t think she was being strange for it. But, it was great to have cooked food that didn’t taste like burnt rubber.

Jayce craned an eyebrow. “You mean you haven’t had them in a while or never?” She nibbled on her toast.

“Never. Usually, I might have a bagel or a muffin or just a cup of coffee. I’ve never had pancakes at home before, except for the frozen ones in a box, which aren’t great. They’re better than nothing, though.” Gus made a face. “Where did this stuff come from?”

“I woke up early and went to the store.”

Gus felt a twinge in her chest, not sure what the sensation was about. “You didn’t have to do all that. I’ve lived without homemade pancakes all my life.
